We all know the story of the tortoise and the hare. The hare, feeling overly confident, challenged the tortoise to a race. After the race began, the hare quickly bolted ahead of the tortoise, but after he got out of sight of the tortoise his overconfidence overcame him and he decided to take a nap. When he awoke from his nap, he saw the tortoise was almost to the finish line. He ran as fast as he could to try to catch up, but he could not overtake the tortoise in time. Victory was to the tortoise. The average investor is much like the hare, riding the market roller coaster, unknowingly accepting too much risk while receiving too little return. Rather than following the hare, our investment philosophy is aligned with the tortoise. Our belief is that in the long run a strategy that avoids excesses in markets will generate higher returns with lowered risk. We implement this strategy by layering an all-weather allocation designed to achieve a return in most environments over our traditional, actively managed portfolios. This allows us to access the full return spectrum of a traditional portfolio while adding an additional source of returns and defensibility to portfolios.
